[discussion of racism and genocide]
gadje: “i want 2 b take my gypsy heart and run thru the magickal world being beautiful and free!!11”
walking people: “sorry we’re too busy getting our asses handed to us by the cops to hear you.”
gadje: *dances off barefoot into forest*
yeah, I think people especially in the U.S. have this ridiculous romanticized idea of what “gypsy” means and complete fail to understand how it does not correlate at all with the actual situation of gypsy/Roma/Sinti/etc. people. for example the racism, poverty, disenfranchisement. people also have this idea that “gypsy life” is carefree and liberal, do whatever the hell you want, screw whatever family and tradition think, which is absurd.
whereas in Hungary I have never heard anyone expressing the slightest longing to run away and be a gypsy, because (1) they are racist and say things like, “Oh, in America you have black people, and they’re like gypsies for us here, aren’t they?” and “Haha, there is no such thing as an attractive gypsy girl” and/or (2) they know that being seen as the scum of society and being the victim of genocide only a few generations ago (a genocide that many people today would like to repeat, along with slogans like “Let’s clean this country,” and many others would would simply look away) is NOT somehow more freeing and desirable than their own racially privileged existence, regardless of what their race is, as long as it isn’t anywhere approaching brown.
Wow, I didn’t realize...had so many notes. I originally posted this ages ago…. still as...
Is this the whimsical, carefree, gypsy life that you want?
There’s a white girl in my class who, whenever anyone asks her where she’s from, says, “Oh, I’ve moved fourteen times,...
On fucking point.
